Sewing for Life – Free Fabric Mask Covers for Medical Professionals and 1st Responders

Have you been hoarding fabric… and you sew. Are you bored  and worried about the Covid 19 crisis. 

Can you make a difference? Yes.  Sew for Lives. We made free, fabric, reusable, washable masks for all Health care givers. MD, RN CNA, MA Housekeeping, firemen, police, Home Health Our mask help protect the precious N95 masks that are in such short supply.

I signed up to sew and clicked the wrong button. I am now the Outreach Coordinator for Oregon for Sewing for Lives. We have over 10,000 seamstresses and have sewn over 40,000 masks. 

As part of the volunteer team, I am reaching out because the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and media outlets have informed the public that medical personnel may have only a limited supply of medical masks. Our group was created in response to the CDC’s new last-resort face mask recommendation and the stories of medical professionals resorting to office supplies to limit their exposure. Since then, our volunteers have made tens of thousands of mask covers, which have been distributed to healthcare and other support facilities across the U.S. and many more continue to be made.

Keep in mind that the mask covers our volunteer sewers create are not intended to prevent infection, or to replace personal protective equipment, but rather cover the medical grade masks.  However, they are constructed in a way that can hold up through the disinfectant process and repeated use.

New Emergency Fund for Individual Artists

Thousands of individual creative professionals have lost contracts, gigs, and teaching work. Performance cancellations, closures and physical distancing requirements are having a devastating impact on greater Portland’s arts community.  In Multnomah County alone, more than 900 individual artists responding to a recent survey estimated nearly $9 million in lost income just for March through May, 2020. 

This is where you can give – and get – help.

RACC’s Emergency Fund for Individual Artists supports individual creative professionals who have experienced a financial loss due to the global pandemic. The fund is open to artists at all levels of their careers, in a broad variety of disciplines. Applicants will be asked to share evidence of their artistic practice, household income and financial loss in the application. RACC will make awards up to $500 in order to support as many individual artists as possible, prioritizing those without access to other COVID-19 relief funds. Technical support and translation services are available.

Give, so artists can survive economically in Oregon.
Apply, so creativity can thrive and lead our collective healing through this critical time.

We all know the power of arts and culture to bring us together and we know that we need the arts – and artists – now more than ever to weather this challenging time.It’s difficult to predict how colleagues and friends will be affected by the coronavirus, so we are joining together to get a snapshot of the impact of what arts organizations and all the different types of artists in Oregon are facing. This will help funders be responsive, and also help all of us make the case for support to leaders in government, business and philanthropy.

Thank you in advance for taking a minute and for sharing information to help build our case. We understand there are many surveys circulating right now.

If you haven’t yet, fill out this survey being used by a consortium of regional and state-wide funders; working in partnership including the Miller Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation, Tualatin Valley Creates and the Regional Arts & Culture Council. Survey closes 5 p.m., Sunday, March 22 (PDT).

Additionally, Congress is making big decisions NOW about federal aid funding for the country’s nonprofit arts sector – as much as $4 billion being requested! Please ensure Oregon’s arts community is a priority by filling out a national survey from Americans for the Arts.

The SWA Spring Show is a professionally judged, non juried show and sale representing a wide variety of art media and disciplines. It features over $1600 in cash prizes in 6 judged categories, sponsor selected awards and a Peoples’s Choice award. Karen Madsen, Artstra Board Chair, serves as judge for this exhibition. Eligibility

  • Open to all artists 18 & older.
  • Original work only: no copies, classwork or collaborations. No reproductions of originals or copyrighted images.
  • Art must not have been previously entered in a SWA show.
  • Art must be appropriate for public spaces.
  • Show committee reserves the right to determine whether art meets the show or category requirements.

Registration / Entry

  • Open to all artists 18 & older.
  • Artists may enter up to 3 works of art.
  • Art must be dry and ready to hang with wire that is at least 2 inches below the top. No saw tooth hangers or clips. Art not properly wired may be rejected.
  • Maximum within 36” and a maximum height is 36” for hanging art. Larger pieces are displayed on easels. Large pieces incur an additional fee and are limited to one per artist, as space allows.
  • Weight limits: 2D—not to exceed 20 lbs. 3D—not to exceed 40 lbs.
  • Registration closes on April 17, or when 200 pieces of art are registered.
  • Registration will be invoiced via PayPal and is due upon receipt. Registrations not paid by April 17 will be void.

Members 1 entry- $20; 2 entries- $35; 3 entries- $45 

Non-members  1entry- $30; 2 entries- $45; 3 entries- $55 Additional $10 for pieces over 36”x 36”

The GLEAN Program invites artists to push the boundaries of material exploration. With the opportunity /challenge of gathering materials from the Metro Central Transfer Station, (aka, “the dump”), the five selected GLEAN artists will broaden their practice in truly unpredictable ways. There is still time to submit your application. If you are interested in applying to the GLEAN program act now! 

The GLEAN art program lasts five months and provides each artist with a $2,000 stipend to support their practice. One of the five spots is reserved for a current student. Artists also receive studio visits, marketing support, seemingly endless materials to work with, and a final exhibition in Fall 2020 at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center. This is an amazing opportunity, don’t wait to apply!

Makers business symposium

On Feb 22nd and 23rd is a business symposium at the Multnomah Arts Center for anyone interested in pursuing their art or craft as a business. I thought you might want to send this to your email list. On the very bottom I also have a link with detailed information.

The Creative Metal Arts Guild of Portland is proudly hosting our second annual Maker’s Business Symposium, focusing on the business of art. While a number of the presenters will be metal artists, almost all of the sessions are relevant regardless of your medium. We’re encouraging artists of all sorts and at any stage in their careers to join us, and we’re giving members of other area guilds a chance to attend at guild rates. If you have friends who are artists, please encourage them to join us!

Women’s Heritage Figures – Call for Artists!

Did you know that this year 2020 celebrates the 100th anniversary of Oregon’s ratification of Amendment 19 which placed women’s voting rights in the Constitution? TRAG has been asked to participate in a year long celebration celebrating women’s rights over the past 100 years. Clackamas County Heritage Council, CCHC, recently asked the Guild to create ten 5-foot cut out figures that depict women’s rights since the mid 1850’s.

These will have a cut out for the face so that the public can take pictures of themselves inside them. Think of the Suffragettes of the 1800’s, Rosie the Riveter from the 1940’s, the bra-burning hippies from the 1960’s, and the #metoo women’s march just 2 years ago. These are only some of the ideas we will be presenting to our artists and participating sponsors.

They will be installed in various places around town, and will receive recognition and exposure through social media, newspapers, and a possible “scavenger hunt”. Artists will be compensated for their work in creating the figures.

Thanks to all who volunteered for this project. Originally 8 TRAG artists were going to create historical figures depicting women’s rights to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Women Suffragette movement. Each figure was to be a life-size cutout which the public could take a photo opportunity with. They were to be installed at the Heritage sites and various businesses in Oregon City. However, when the pandemic hit, the plans were put aside.
 
A virtual meeting with the Clackamas County Heritage Council was held on April 15th. Possibilities were discussed to either postpone or continue by a different method. Ideas were considered such as an application like Jib Jab where the public can superimpose their faces onto virtual figures and/or the distribution of coloring books. A second meeting took place just this past week, and it was decided to decrease the number of heritage figures from 8 to 2. These will be installed at 2818 NE 10th Ave in Portland from May 16-30th during the “Parading in Place” event sponsored by the Rose Festival.
