Call for Artists: 2020 Oregon City Festival of the Arts

For the fifth year, the Three Rivers Artist Guild is presenting an arts, culture and heritage event known as the Oregon City Festival of the Arts (OCFOTA) on August 8 and 9, 2020. The Festival will again be held at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive & Visitor Information Center located at 1726 Washington Street, Oregon City, OR 97045. Hours of Operation are 10-5 each day. OCFOTA draws an attendance of 2500-3000 throughout the weekend.

As artists and community leaders, our mission is to encourage and support all forms of art in Oregon City and Clackamas County. The goal of the event is to promote visual and performing artists, the heritage community, tourism groups and local food and beverage vendors to create a unique community event. This event is free to the public.

This is a juried art show open to residents of Oregon and Washington State. A nonrefundable $20 jury fee application is due no later than April 15, 2020.

If accepted, the booth fee is $135. This includes your booth space (10’ x 10’) and marketing for the Oregon City Festival of the Arts.

Please note: This is an outdoor event on the grass. Although we make every effort to find the most level and suitable booth spaces, not all locations are perfectly flat. Also, there is no power available for the booths. Please note, we periodically experience inclement weather. The ground may be wet. Please be prepared for potential showers or wind.

No more than two artists may share a booth and art must be compatible. Both must be juried in and send in separate applications and jury fees. You will share the booth fee of $135.

May 1, 2020: Jury results sent to artists.
June 30, 2020: $135 booth payments due.
August 7, 2020: Friday Festival set-up

What you include in your statement is exactly what will be posted on Instagram and Facebook for marketing. Please make it approximately 100 words. The digital images are what we will be using for the jury process – so submit your best work!

Just a note: Each year we conduct an artists’ survey after the show. We take this feedback very seriously. As a result, we will be reaching out to different guilds to make the genres more balanced and include more disciplines. This means that the jurying process will be more competitive.

Call for Artists – Student Art Show at The Spiral Gallery

December 15, 2019 Artist Opportunities

Dear Artist,

The Spiral Gallery is pleased to once again announce our annual Student Art Show. This event will take place in January 2020 and is an opportunity to showcase local artists of all ages (young and old) who are currently enrolled in school or an arts class or is just a student of life. Home-schooled children are also welcome, of course. If you have artwork you would like to submit, please review the following information:

All work must be for sale with a 30% commission going to the gallery.
2-D work (work that is hung on a wall) must be framed and ready to hang (with wires for hanging in the back). Framing is responsibility of the artist. Pedestals will be provided for 3-D artwork. The local Artsmith in Estacada is a great place to get those supplies or have them do it for you.
Students may enter more than one piece, but the gallery will decide what is to hang depending on space available.
Work must remain in the gallery for the entire show month. Work must be delivered to the gallery for display – without exception – no later than December 27, 2019.

An opening reception will be held as usual for the 1^st Friday of the month (January 3, 2020). Refreshments and goodies will be served. Students and families are encouraged to attend this fun community event!

Items can be dropped off – starting now – space is limited to the gallery show room, so good to bring art early. The attached form needs to be filled out and brought in with artwork during regular business hours, Mon – Sat, 11-6 pm, and Sundays 12-4 pm. Volunteers are needed for the Oregon City Festival of the Arts.

TRAG is an all volunteer organization and the success of our events is because of the amazing support we receive from Volunteers. We can’t do it without you. Please consider volunteering an hour or two or even half a day if you can to the Oregon City Festival of the Arts this year – which is one our most attended and popular events. Make it a family event – and bring friends and family members to help out. We would sure appreciate it!

The Three Rivers Artist Guild is holding the 4^th annual Oregon City Festival of the Arts on August 10 and 11^th. The Festival is an outdoor event held on the beautiful grounds of the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center located at 1726 Washington Street in Oregon City. More than 60 Artists’ booths, all day entertainment on two stages, local food trucks, an Emerging Artists Exhibit, Children’s Hands-on Art Projects, and a Silent Auction makes this an event not to be missed. Free Admission and fun for the whole family!

Paint by Numbers Community Art Project

June 12, 2019 Events Organized by TRAG

A dozen local artists will involve community members in a shared paint-by-number experience during the First City Celebration on July 13th from 11am-6:00pm. The project, sponsored by the Three Rivers Artist Guild with grants from the Mt Hood Territories Cultural Partnership Program and the Oregon City Rotary Club, will celebrate Oregon City and the arts. Money raised will be donated to Oregon City Schools to benefit art programs.

Artists will each be assigned letters to create a unique paint by number outline that uses up to 8 colors. People attending the First City Celebration can participate in coloring 5 sections for every $2 they donate. Once completed, the letters will be combined to create a mystery phrase that will be revealed and displayed on the Main Stage during the Celebration.

We are accepting up to 20 emerging artists with little or no prior experience in showing their work.

Each new artist selected will be able to show one piece at a time in a special area at the festival. You may have two backup pieces in case your work sells.

September Artists’ Reception

Come join us for our next Artists’ Reception. Our September and October rotation features 45 artists, including artists that are brand new to the Guild and to our Gallery! Original oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, jewelry, Etch-a-Sketch art, fabric, mixed media, ceramics and much more. Complimentary appetizers and coffee provided. Beer and wine are available for purchase. This is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

We are located inside Singer Hill Cafe in Oregon City. We hope to see you on the 16th!

Embracing Limitations and the New TRAG Quarterly Assignment

We’ve started a new “assignment” for TRAG members to try and inspire conversation and new work based on our August 2018 meeting program. We began the August meeting discussing “Limitations and Creative Problem Solving” by showing a TED Talk by artist Phil Hansen entitled “Embrace the Shake,” where he talked about dealing with a physical challenge that tested his faith and resolve as an artist.

From there we talked about how our limitations, either inherent or self-imposed, can be embraced to result in new work. Through problem solving and conversation five groups shared their challenges and did some creative problem solving. We brainstormed lists of inherent or self-imposed limitations that might keep us from or inspire us to create new work:

Inherent Limitations – factors we may not be able to control that prevent us from creating art.

Space, Time, Money, Energy, Physical Difficulties, Emotional Difficulties, Access to Tools, Education

Imposed Limitations – factors we can control that we intentionally use to eliminate obstacles and simplify process.

Subject (conceptual or specific), Focusing on the Use of a Specific Tool, Focus on a Technique, Using time limits to either force quick creation or a stopping point

Ultimately the discussion resulted in the beginnings of a quarterly TRAG member assignment meant to spark creativity and get people creating art. Each of the five groups decided what their assignment would be and we’ll see the results of those assignments over the next three general meetings as people start to bring in their interpretations of the assignment.

Assignments by group for the Quarter of August 13th – November 12th

Clay and Glass Work: Use new materials that you haven’t used before
Painters: Three colors
Jewelers: Ocean
Mixed Media: Harvest
Photographers: Pick an Element of Art as Subject – Form, Line, Color, Space, Texture, or Value

These assignments are optional of course, but I encourage folks to use them as a way to spur new thinking and work. Allow yourself the space to play and maybe not create your best work in hopes of giving you the freedom to explore new ideas and create art without the pressure of perfection or daily life.

Also feel free to take liberties with the assignment. The goal is to stimulate creation, not stifle it. We’ll share the results of the assignment for those who want to share in our member emails. We can’t wait to see what folks create!

Paint in the Garden at Singer Hill Cafe – Monday, July 30

Come join us July 30th Monday night from 5-7 for Paint Night in the Singer Hill Art Garden. Bonnie Moore, a well-known watercolor Artist, will lead us in painting a drippy watercolor wash on canvass, and then Trieste Andrews will finish up with a summer inspired sunflower. See below for the sunflower and just imagine a colorful splash in the background. Easy, creative, and fun!
