Survey about in person meeting on January 10th, 2022

Dear Members of TRAG,

Once again we are faced with whether or not it is safe to meet in person.  As you know, my number one goal for TRAG for this year is to REUNITE our community in person.  I have been watching the numbers of Covid cases in our state over this week and the number yesterday was almost double that of the number on Monday.  I haven’t seen today’s number yet.

Given that we are not asking for proof of vaccination at our meetings (I have heard from some members that they feel strongly that we should NOT ask for proof of vaccination), that overall we are an “older” group of people, and that I am a retired nurse, I really worry about us meeting in person.
I’d like feedback from the membership to make the decision on whether we should meet in person in January or not.  If we do not meet, I recommend that we try again in February.  We will not do a Zoom meeting since the plan for the meeting was to socialize in person – I have nothing else planned at this time.

Please answer the following questions ASAP.

Thank you for your help with this decision.

2021 Holiday Show

by Lynda Orzen, Holiday Show Coordinator

I am going to claim the 2021 Holiday Show a success. We didn’t have as many artists participating but shoppers still had a huge variety of artwork to choose from. I know I did a lot of shopping during the weekend! Shoppers were so happy to be able to able to shop in person-finally! Heard lots of comments about the wealth of artwork and the organization of the event.

Tried to take some photos of the event but I’m definitely not a photographer. Unfortunately our photographer, Ingrid Aubry was recuperating from a broken hip. Happy to say, she is recuperating quite well!

Want to thank volunteers and organizers for pitching in to make this a wonderful event!

Happy New Years Artists and a New Year of creating art!

Lynda Orzen

Last letter from the president for 2021

Dear Guild Members,

The end of 2021 is fast approaching, and the end of my TRAG president’s term as well. As you may know the TRAG bylaws state that no elected board member can serve for more than 2 years and I along with the other elected board members – Vice president Jeanne Cardana, Treasurer Cheri Bosserman and Secretary Tamara Scott– are moving on. TRAG is fortunate that Tamara Scott has agreed to take the position of president for 2022. TRAG has also elected Rhoda Bohr as Vice President, Cathy Rowe as Secretary, and Nancy Graham as Treasurer. I am confident and excited that TRAG’s new board will carry the Guild through to better times and remain as strong and vibrant in our community as in years past. Please make sure you make it to the in-person meeting on January 10th at the Pioneer Center in Oregon City from 7pm – 8:30pm if you can. The new TRAG president Tamara Scott will be brainstorming with members on the future of TRAG.

I look back on the last 2 years and am astounded at what TRAG accomplished in possibly one of the worst economic times in history due to the pandemic. As the Gallery hit hard times, due to the anchor tenant leaving the Singer Hill Café, we turned to other avenues to support the Gallery, our TRAG members and the arts in Oregon City. We were able to procure project funding through the metro enhancement grant for the Storefront Art Gallery and Event project in 2020 ($9370) and the mural project for 2021 ($18690). Both these projects offered artists opportunities to participate and sell their artwork. And TRAG was able to use some of the grant funds to run the Spring Fling Pop up Art Show in May 2021. Additionally, TRAG applied and received funding in the amount of almost $20,000 through the Oregon Community grant, the Oregon City Business grant, the Coronavirus Relief Grant, the CARES ACT, and our own Oregon City business partners. The Spring Fling Art show was a tremendous success as was the Holiday Show, and the 2021 Oregon City Festival of the Arts was the most successful show we TRAG has held so far. These were all truly a team effort, and my deepest thanks to the Guild members who contributed to all these major events to make them happen. Although the decision was made to close the Singer Hill gallery at the end of May due to slow traffic, our amazing landlords Phil and Vicki Yates had let us use the space for free as they realized TRAG was hitting hard times. All of these contributions put TRAG in the best financial state we have ever been in for 2022. I am grateful to be able to hand over the reins to a new board knowing they have a strong financial springboard to have the freedom to accomplish absolutely anything they wish.

I have so many TRAG members to thank for helping TRAG thrive in such difficult times. Cheri Bosserman the TRAG treasurer who kept TRAG on track – but more importantly whose friendship through one of the most difficult times of my life literally kept me sane. Yelena Shabrova whose constant tweaks and upgrades to our website and knowledge of IT issues kept us not only surviving but growing. Cathy Rowe who partnered with me to procure the Metro grant for murals and was the lead artist and project manager for the Trolley Car renovation. Tamara Scott who pitched in to help with the Storefront Gallery Art Project as we installed and removed 3’x6’ art pieces from TRAG artists throughout Oregon City. Lynda Orzen for her knowledge and help for murals, the Holiday Show, and OCFOTA. Kerry Edwards for her help in procuring and managing volunteers for TRAG’s events. Each and every one of the OCFOTA committee who took on the responsibility of running the best Festival TRAG has ever had – and had fun doing it. Melody Bush who pitched in to run the social marketing campaign for both OCFOTA and the Holiday Show. Ingrid Aubry who tirelessly takes care of all of our graphics for each and every event. The Gallery managers – Susan Woodworth, Jeanne Kelly Brown, and Holly Kroenig – who kept the Gallery running for almost a year and a half against all odds and then with Tamara Scott’s help made the tough decision with the TRAG board to close it – and then took on the myriad of tasks that goes with closing a store. And last but certainly not least – each and every one of TRAG’s members for your continued membership, input, participation, support, and enthusiasm. I will be forever grateful.

I’d also like to give a special shout out to our Oregon City community members. Over the past 2 years TRAG forged some strong and important partnerships. The OC Chamber of Commerce and its members who have contributed financially and gotten the word out for every one of TRAG’s events. The Oregon City Tourism and Economic Development group who supported TRAG’s mural initiative as well as all of our events. The many organizations who reached out for TRAG’s help for their own projects – Parks and Rec, the Women’s Club, Art in Oregon, Soul Flags, the OC Rotary Club, Clackamas County Arts Alliance, and the Downtown Oregon City Association. I am grateful that TRAG was able to contribute $1000 to OC School District in 2020 and $1000 to the Children’s Center in 2021 for the support of the Arts. My one wish for TRAG is that they keep the community partnerships going – it is a big reason for our success and fulfills our mission of supporting the arts in Oregon City.

I move on with mixed feelings – nostalgic and sad to leave an organization I have loved so much, but excited about some new opportunities on the horizon. As a member of the new Oregon City Art Commission, I was recently asked to Chair the Commission. I have still not decided on that – but am considering it. Oregon City’s new focus on the need for Art and Culture is a truly exciting time, and TRAG was a strong factor in bringing this about. My hope, as one of the art commissioners, is to continue working with TRAG as a supporting partner in these new initiatives.

Be well and stay well my friends. Life is short. Pursue your passions, love each other, forgive each other, and find every moment you can to reach out with a helping hand. My years with TRAG and the many friendships I made will always hold a special place in my heart. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

TRAG Donates $1000 to the Children’s Center

TRAG’s mission statement is: “We are a welcoming and inclusive organization providing mutual support, encouragement, services, and education for the enrichment of artists and their communities”. In accordance with our mission statement, each year TRAG’s budget includes a donation amount to go towards the support and education of art in our community. In years past, TRAG has given money to the Oregon City School district with the request that it be used towards the arts. This year the TRAG board chose the Children’s Center in Oregon City.

The Children’s Center’s motto is “A place where healing begins”. It strives to work with the community to end child abuse and neglect through assessment, treatment, and prevention. Art therapy is often a tool that is used by the Center, and TRAG requested that the $1000 donation be used for this program if possible.

TRAG dropped off the check to the Children’s Center on December 14th. Executive Director Karen Rush later let TRAG know that the Art Therapist was “ecstatic” to be able to spend this donation for art supplies in the coming year. Karen has promised TRAG future pictures and a report on how our donation was used. TRAG was also honored at both the Chamber of Commerce meeting and the Oregon City Rotary Club meeting on December 15th for our generous donation.

In this season of giving, I am deeply grateful that TRAG was able to support such a deserving non-profit organization that makes a profound difference in children’s lives.

In-Person January Meeting!!

Updated January 8th, 2022: based on the results of the membership survey, the January 10th general meeting has been canceled. Stay safe and healthy, everyone!

We will be returning to in-person meetings starting in January!! Our first meeting, on Monday January 10th, will be at the Pioneer Center basement meeting room from 7-8:30 pm. We will have a very short business meeting and then spend a bit of time brainstorming ideas for the future of TRAG.

I would appreciate it if people could think about the following things and bring your ideas with you on January 10th:

1. Would you be interested in changing the TRAG member meeting time to a Saturday from 10am-12:30pm or 1;00pm? This would allow for longer presentations/art workshops; allow members who are not able to drive at night to attend; more social time to connect with fellow artists. The schedule would be:

10-10:15–Socialize
10:15-10:45 (MAX!)–Business meeting
10:45-12:30–Program (workshop and/or presentation)
12:30-1:00–Sharing of art brought in by members (critique if desired)

2. Presentations/workshops you would like to see offered.

3. How important is it to you to have a Gallery associated with TRAG? Would you be willing to participate on a committee to work on finding a new Gallery space?

4. Would you be interested in having a fundraising Gala/silent auction this year?

5. Should we plan on having OCFOTA again this year or move that to every other year? Would you be interested in participating on the planning committee for OCFOTA if we move ahead with it this year?

Those are the things I can think of off the top of my head. We can have some discussion about these items, but the goal of the January meeting is to RECONNECT with each other!! There will be large post-it presentation pads around the room that you can write your suggestions on as you are socializing with others. The board will take the ideas you write down and make plans for this coming year.

I’m excited to be the President starting in January and am looking forward to a year of reconnection with members.

NOTE:
We will be following the CDC Guidelines and the current mandates put in place by our governor in order to keep everyone safe. Masks will be required and must be worn over your mouth and nose at ALL times while in the meeting. We ask that if you have any ill symptoms, that you not attend the meeting.

I hope you have a great holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you at the meeting in January.

Tamara Scott
TRAG President-elect

TRAG Gallery Note

Our TRAG Gallery has had the best of times and better times are slowly brewing for our future. November 30  was met with Phil and Vicki Yates as we moved out of the Singer Hill building and they are remodeling for the future. We all will miss times spent together.

As gallery managers: myself, Jeanne Kelly-Brown, Holly Kroenig welcomed Tamara Scott’s help every step of the way as we took care of business. We all cleaned, lifted toted and moved items out the door. It wasn’t an easy task as the holidays are coming and we all were working on our art projects at the same time.

Over the month our gallery furniture was purchased and welcomed into several new local galleries. The rolling card rack was delivered to a new Art start up in North Portland. The old oak jewelry case that was originally purchased from an antique shop where “The Hive” is, went to an artist consignment shop in Sandy, Oregon. Tamara took on the challenge of listing miscellaneous pieces to Craigslist and Marketplace. All in all we sold a total of $1650 and had a a minimal load to the dump. We thank the muscle men: my husband and Holly’s for taking on some big tasks.

TRAG needs to include a gallery in its future in promoting new and established artists and keeping local art in the community. That future gallery will come in time.

Best holiday wishes from your Gallery Managers:

Do You Know That by Donating to the Arts in Oregon, You Can Double Your Donation for Free?

So many of our cultural organizations, including the Three Rivers Artist Guild, have been hit especially hard by the pandemic – there has never been a more important time for Oregonians to support arts and culture through the cultural tax credit.

If you donated to any arts, heritage or humanities nonprofits in Oregon this year, you can double your impact for FREE through the Oregon Cultural Trust tax credit.

Here’s how:

  1. Total the amount you gave to the non-profits on the list found through the Oregon Cultural Trust site at https://culturaltrust.org/. The Three Rivers Artists Guild is on this list
  2. Give a matching amount to the Cultural Trust at https://appengine.egov.com/apps/or/oct/donationpayment or by mail by December 31st. to Oregon Cultural Trust, 775 Summer Street NE, Suite 200 Salem, OR 97301

TRAG gallery is going into storage

The TRAG gallery has been in Singer Hill Cafe for 10 years running very smoothly for all but the last year plus.  Unfortunately for us Singer Hill Cafe owners are remodeling for their future that will not include TRAG. We have been fortunate over all these years that the Singer Hill owners have offered us a home. We wish them well.

At this time with long discussions between the gallery managers and then a board vote we close out this chapter of the TRAG gallery at Singer Hill. The majority of gallery furniture has been sold and some went to the TRAG storage.

The gallery provided a special venue for new artist to experience being juried and sell their art for the first time. With an all volunteer TRAG membership more than just a location to sell art formed. We weathered some difficult times together over the last year.

As we go into the next year, we hope to recreate another TRAG gallery to call home.
